Dallas County Gun Surrender Program

Why Sign the Statement of Support for the Dallas County Gun Surrender Program

Because of the deadly risk that firearms pose when they intersect with domestic violence, both federal and Texas state law prohibit convicted domestic abusers and those under Protective Order from buying or being in the presence of guns as well as ammunition.  Dallas County instituted the Gun Surrender Program (GSP) in 2015 to establish a mechanism for abusers to relinquish their firearms to a law enforcement agency. However, the GSP has been very difficult to enforce due to complexities of the processes, the number of agencies involved and the need for a coordinator to monitor it.  To date, Dallas County has collected only 10% (101) of the firearms it had estimated (1000).

Representatives of the District Attorney’s office, Dallas County judges and commissioners, City of Dallas Council member Jennifer Gates, Dallas Police Department officials, CEOs of Genesis Women’s Shelter and The Family Place, SMU’s Hunter Legal Center for Victims of Crimes Against Women and Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America are meeting to identify and strategize best solutions to achieving greater compliance with these cases.

This statement of support was crafted by the District Attorney’s office to demonstrate county-wide support of the Gun Surrender Program. The cover page is signed by the CEOs of the two shelters that house most of those fleeing from domestic violence because of imminent danger to their lives and to their families.  The page for your signature includes a line for the organization with which you may be affiliated, but that space can be left blank if you prefer.

We hope to have 1000 signatures of support for this program to submit to Dallas County Commissioners later this spring when the coalition of agencies meets to request funding for additional personnel based on findings from meetings.

We appreciate your signature and your support,

Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America
