Understanding Poverty Book Club

  • Arapaho United Methodist Church 1400 West Arapaho Road Richardson, TX, 75080 United States (map)

Did you know that the same regions of the brain that process pain are also activated when you observe others in distress? It is through your own experience of suffering that you develop empathy for others.

This school year, Pastor Cathy will be leading discussions to help participants better understand the experience of the poor. If you are involved in any of AUMC's community outreach ministries, you'll want to dive deep into these discussions.

In this first session, we will focus on the economics of poverty, using lessons from two NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLERS –

Maid: Hard Work, Low Pay, and a Mother's Will to Survive by Stephanie Land
(available here on Amazon and Audible) and

Nickel And Dimed: On (Not) Getting By In America by award-winning journalist Barbara Ehrenreich
(available here on Amazon and Audible.)

You do not need to read the books to participate, but you won't want to put them down if you do. Either way is acceptable!

Please submit your name and email to receive the link to the online class.
